Apple Pickin’—Harvest Some Healthy Super Fruit

Red, yellow or green—apples aren’t just for showing your teacher how much you care. The pomaceous fruit is a super food with a whole host of health benefits that more than match their juicy, crispy goodness.

Cuts Cholesterol—Apples contain pectin, a soluble fiber, that has been shown to lower levels of LDL cholesterol.

Fiber-Full—The fiber in apples also keeps you feeling full, without packing in a lot of calories. That’s because it takes our bodies longer to digest complex fiber—aka the kind in apples—than it does sugar or refined grains.

Peeling Pounds—The peel on an apple contains ursolic acid. In a recent study in mice, ursolic acid was linked to a lower risk of obesity because it increased muscle production and calories burned.

Breathe Easier—Another reason to munch on the apple’s peel—it contains an antioxidant called quercetin which has been linked to better lung function. Moms who regularly eat apples while pregnant have been shown to have a lower chance of giving birth to children with asthma, too.

“C” The Vitamins—Apples may not beat out oranges in the vitamin C department, but they are still a great source. A medium sized apple packs in about 8 milligrams of the stuff.

“Coring” Cancer—Two studies have shown that apples may help fight colon, liver and breast cancers due to compounds they contain called triterpenoids.

Diabetes Buster—A class of antioxidants found in apples—anthocyanin—(also found in pears and blueberries) has been shown to lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes in recent studies.

Stem Memory Loss—Apples have been linked to an increase in the production of acetylcholine, an organic, polyatomic ion that acts as a communicator for your nerve cells. There’s a chance that the fruit can aid memory, as well as decrease your chances of developing Alzheimer’s.

Apparently the old adage advising us to eat an apple a day to keep the doctor away was on to something! Whether its a Golden Delicious, Red Rome or Granny Smith, take a bite out of your favorite apple, and make the most of this fall’s apple season!
