Common Hereditary Skin Conditions

Everyone deserves to have healthy skin! This week, we examine three common hereditary skin conditions – rosacea, psoriasis and acne. Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes redness of the face. It can also cause a burning or stinging feeling. While there is no cure, you can identify triggers that make symptoms worse, such as sun exposure, spicy food and hot beverages. Psoriasis

Psoriasis can occur almost anywhere on the body, but it is most often found on the elbows, knees, nails, and the scalp. Psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes itchy, red patches to appear. Like rosacea, there is no cure. They key is to learn how to control your symptoms. Oatmeal baths can help smooth skin. There are also several topical medications that are placed directly on the skin or scalp.

Acne

Acne is most common in teens, but anyone can get acne including adults and babies! Acne tends to run in families and is usually triggered by hormonal changes and stress. Despite the rumors, research does not show that chocolate, nuts, and greasy foods cause acne. However, diets high in refined sugars may be related. There are many different treatment options available, so talk to your doctor to find one that is best for you.
