Fifty million Americans have some form of arthritis. The condition effects all ages and races and can be extremely debilitating. One form of arthritis is Rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A form of inflammatory arthritis and an autoimmune disease, RA affects an estimated 1.3 million Americans or almost 1 percent of the country’s adults.
In RA the person’s immune system attacks the body’s own tissues, specifically the synovium, a thin membrane that lines the joints. No one knows why the immune system, which is supposed to protect our bodies from diseases, instead turns on healthy tissue. As a result of the immune system going after the synovium, fluid builds up in the joints. This causes pain in the joints and inflammation that can occur throughout the body.
According to the Arthritis Foundation, recent studies have shown that regular massage can help alleviate some arthritis symptoms such as pain, stiffness, range of motion problems, lack of hand grip strength and overall function of the joints. They stress, however, that massage should only be used as a complement to your doctor-prescribed arthritis treatment. And of course, a massage should not cause you pain or make any of your symptoms worse.
On September 18, Massage Envy Spa will once again partner with the Arthritis Foundation and donate $10 from every one-hour massage or facial to arthritis research. It is a part of Massage Envy Spa’s Healing Hands for Arthritis efforts, which includes being a national sponsor of the Arthritis Foundation’s Arthritis Walk® events throughout the country. Massage Envy Spa is a natural partner with the Arthritis Foundation, as both understand the devastating effects arthritis can have on the body and the potential for massage therapy to relieve and control certain symptoms.
