When it comes to being the best, you have to train like the best. BUT, if you don’t have the luxury of time like most of us, you have to do with what you haveand Massage Envy Spa massage therapist Karen Moers is taking advantage of the time given to her as she ramps up to participate in this year’s Boston Marathon. Through the generous support of the Massage Therapy Foundation and the John Hancock Non-Profit Bid Program, Karen is participating in this year’s race on Team Running for Research. We’ve asked her to share her experiences, her sights, her motivations, all in the hopes of inspiring others as she does on a daily basis. This entry sees her tackling one of the most challenging aspects of running a marathon:

16674_10203371139706328_514621916_nCornhole tournament day!! My coworkers are amazing. As soon as we, employees and I, found out that I was running the Boston Marathon everyone started coming up with random fun ways to raise money for the Massage Therapy Foundation. One great idea came from our lead therapist to have a cornhole tournament. Wonderful idea!! It took minimal organizing and was extremely easy to get people to attend. We charged $5 for attendance, and $15 per team to play and include raffle tickets. Raffle prizes included gift cards to various restaurants and local shops. We raised over $600!! I was so stoked. I am truly blessed to have such amazing friends to support me and the foundation. Weather was beautiful and they had a small fire once the sun when down. It was perfect. Pizza, beer, friends, and cornhole. I couldn’t ask for better way to raise money. :)

BeachSo sore from the long run on Sunday but it’s a good sore. I need the long run training as much as possible. Monday nights is the social group run night. Some friends and I show up early do an extra mile and tons of stretching. The social run is a 5k route. Started off at a 10min pace which was fine. We ended up pushing a little bit towards the end and worked up towards an 8 min pace. I love this route but it crosses numerous traffic lights. We joke as we wait for cars “You know how you can tell the difference between a runner and a jogger? A jogger will jog in place at a light; a runner will stand there looking pissed.” True story. But overall, run was fantastic, weather was perfect (high 60s).

Karen Moers AsicsFinally signed up the Donna half marathon with some friends. Rather excited. This is a pretty big race and the course is familiar (in the beach area). The Donna does about a mile and half on the beach so I did a short beach run this evening to prepare. I ran in some older shoes, my Asics :). They were a Christmas present from my sister and brother in law. I call them my ‘happy shoes’ because you can’t be sad looking at them. I am a huge fan of ‘fun’ shoes. I needed to give my newer shoes a break. Not to mention I hate running with sand in my shoes so I wanted to keep the newer ones sand free. Beautiful weather all day. It was perfect. I can only hope that race day will be the same way but apparently it’s going to rain….BLAH! I plan on running 6 miles on Saturday and adding in a few extra miles on Sunday after the race depending on the weather. Ideally, I would like to run a total of 18 miles but I’d be happy with 16 miles. If it rains…it’ll just be race + mimosas with friends.

988401_10100516771019003_10690505_nDONNA DAY!!!!!!! I got peer pressured into running the Donna Half and it was an early day. They close down the main road to the start line at 5:30am so we all had to be up and ready by 5a.m. pink tutus and all! Ugh…such a long morning. Weather was actually perfect. High 60s, there was a chance of rain but not till later. Overcast the entire time. This is my first time running the Donna and I was very impressed at how organized it was. If you have ever ran and unorganized race, it sucks. I mainly ran with two other girls, Tiffany and Olivia (pictured left). We held close to a 9:15-9:30 pace for the first 6 or so miles. This course runs a little over a mile on the beach which can slow you down, but the bridge at mile 10-12….WAY worse.

Karen Moers ExhaustedIt mentally kicked my rear before I even crossed it. Although I finished in my fastest time, 2:04:42! So stoked!!!!(2:10:53 was my previous personal record(PR)). I practically died after. My legs felt great; however my lungs were on fire! I have been training for distance but not for speed. Not that a 9:30 pace is super fast but I usually run at a 10 min mile. So worth it though. It was just what I needed to boost my excitement for Boston.

Down with the Sickness
So I have been ‘sick’ for almost a week now. What started out as a typical cough turned into a fever, body aches, headache, etc. When training for a marathon being sick is not an option. I train to avoid injury. Believe it or not, pain is a great motivator. The last marathon I ran was awful. The only thing I could think of while running is, ‘I should’ve ran more’. So with that being said, I’m dying from not running. I took a few days off and started back slow. I kept it simple, just a typical 3 mile run on Monday night. It wasn’t horrible until I continued to hack up a lung. I don’t smoke but I feel this is what it would feel like if I did. Never the less I’m glad I ran. Something is better than nothing.

Today was long day and cold one at that. I debated running with the 1st Place Sports group for about an hour. It was wet and cold and I feared I might get sick again. The Wednesday night group run is one of my favorite courses, bridge loop. Last minute I decided to run. I needed to do 3 loops (around 9 miles) but ended up doing 2 (6 miles). My cough started back up around mile 4.5-5 so I decided not to push it. Mentally it’s tough. I know what I need to do but the fear of being set back again, from being sick, would be way worse than just keeping it slow and steady.
