Skincare for Women of All Ages

By: Howard Murad, M.D., FAAD

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and while we’re celebrating all the important women in our lives, now is the perfect opportunity to address skincare specifically for women. It is important to take care of and maintain healthy skin regardless of age. As the largest organ of the human body, the health of the skin is a reflection of both our physical and mental health. While topical care is an essential component of a preventative skincare regimen, it is important to take an Inclusive Health approach to skin health. In addition to using the right products, we need to focus on internal (maintaining a nutritious diet including proper supplement) and emotional (a focus on sense-of-self) care. It is never too early, or too late, for a woman to begin a preventative skincare regimen.

Here are some major skincare concerns affecting women ranging from 20 to over 50 years of age, as well as advice to keep skin looking its best from world renowned youth-building expert, Howard Murad, M.D., FAAD.

In Your 20s

Most young women usually experience their best years for skin appearance following adolescence. One method for maintaining healthy skin at this stage in life is to protect skin from sun exposure. Sun damage is a leading cause of skin cancer and can also cause wrinkles sooner than expected. It is important to get into the habit of wearing SPF daily after completing your morning face-cleansing routine. Eating water-rich foods and taking supplements that are high in antioxidants will help fight off damaging free-radicals, which is an important factor in protecting your skin from sun damage. Your face will thank you years later!

In Your 30s

Skincare needs to be taken more seriously during this time. At this age, fine lines become more evident around the eyes and mouth. The onset is usually a result of previous sun damage, stress and diet. Minimize the appearance of these fine lines by incorporating a retinol-based product that will smooth skin and regenerate collagen. Additionally, increase your intake of raw fruits and vegetables which will help your skin and body stay hydrated longer than just drinking water. Take a supplement that contains Glucosamine and Amino Acids to encourage healthy collagen production. And finally, take time for yourself! Get a facial, take a walk or do something that you enjoy which will help decrease stress.

In Your 40s

Over the course of time, a woman in her 40s may notice that her skin shows more noticeable lines around the forehead, eyes and mouth. Return the youthful glow your skin once had with hydrating products and take special care with an anti-aging facial to further rejuvenate and rehydrate the skin.

Internal hydration is also key. If you find yourself constantly dehydrated, try something new: Eat your water! How? Just replace at least one glass of water a day with one serving of raw fruits or vegetables or water rich foods to strategically hydrate so water is available to your cells throughout the day.

In Your 50s

Women in their 50s tend to have skincare concerns relating to lackluster skin that has lost its firmness and elasticity. Menopausal women may also begin to notice that their skin has become more dry, sensitive and dull. Restore youth’s glow with products that cater to hormonal aging and supplement with monthly facials to prevent and fight the signs of aging.

Also, add good fats like walnuts, avocado and olive oil to help rebuild cell membranes and reduce dry, dull skin. Enjoy embryonic foods like eggs, beans and seeds; these foods contain all the building blocks for regeneration and will flood your body with vital nutrients to make all your cells healthier.

At Any Age

Treat yourself to massages as often as possible. Massage not only benefits the muscles and tissues being kneaded and stretched, but also has been found to lower stress levels significantly. It can help alleviate depression, reduce pain in cancer patients, improve sleep patterns, and positively alter the immune system. After all, healthy skin is a reflection of overall wellness!

By following these tips you’ll be on your way to healthier skin in no time. For more information on Murad® Healthy Skin Facials, or to buy a Massage Envy gift card for your mom for Mother’s Day, visit http://www.massageenvy.com.
