Q & Ahhh
Massage Envy experts answer your questions
Q: Can massage help my arthritis?

A: The condition of arthritis comes in many forms.
The most common is osteoarthritis, which typically occurs during
middle or old age. It's categorized as a joint disease, mostly
affecting the cartilage around the joint. Symptoms of
osteoarthritis include pain, swelling and loss of motion of the
joint.
Recent studies suggest that massage can help reduce pain,
improve flexibility and increase mobility in those who suffer with
arthritis. In addition, a study from the Touch Research Institute
at the University of Miami showed that receiving massage on a
regular basis lowers anxiety, reduces pain and improves grip
strength for those with arthritis.
Receiving massage therapy on an ongoing basis is a healthy
choice for those with arthritis. Just be sure to check with your
doctor first to make sure your type of arthritis is safe for
receiving massage.
