Massage Envy experts answer your questions
Q: Can receiving massage on a regular basis help with carpal
tunnel syndrome and hand pain?
A: Hand pain is often associated with arthritis, carpal tunnel
syndrome, tendonitis and tennis elbow, all of which can greatly
limit usage of one's hands in everyday activities. Carpal tunnel is
a condition where the median nerve is squeezed as it passes through
the narrow path at the wrist. Symptoms can include numbness,
tingling and pain in the fingers, wrists and thumbs. This can
result when the hands are used for repetitive movement for extended
periods of time, like computer work, sports, and other physical
activities. Massage therapy is very effective for pain in the hands
and wrists as it relaxes muscles and tissues in these areas helping
to decrease symptoms. The Touch Research Institute in Miami, Fla.,
conducted a study in 2010 on the effects of massage with hand pain.
The study showed massage decreased pain, increased grip strength
and improved sleep in those suffering from hand pain.
