Over the last decade, the estimated number of massage therapists in the US has increased by 14% to 351,558. Source: amtamassage.org

FLEXIBILITY

Many people choose this profession for the flexibility it offers in terms of work hours, independence, and choice of practice locations and types.

CONNECTION

Another appealing aspect is the opportunity to build a clientele based on making a positive difference in people’s lives.

GROWTH

The field of massage therapy is constantly evolving with new research and techniques to master, which leads to both personal and career growth.

What Sort of Training Is Required?

The requirements to become a licensed massage therapist vary by state and municipality. In most states, you’ll need to complete an entry-level training program, then prepare for and pass the MBLEx licensing exam. A local massage therapy program can provide you with the relevant requirements for your area.

Training programs for massage therapy generally require a high school diploma, although post-secondary education is useful as well. Nearly half of massage therapists (46%) have a bachelor’s degree or higher but it’s not required. Source: amtamassage.org

There are currently more than 900 massage therapy schools in the US, and many of those institutions have multiple locations. You should consider a wide range of factors when choosing where to study. The AMTA website (amtamassage.org) offers a wealth of resources to help you find the right program for you.
